Tsunami waves triggered by a massive earthquake under the sea, off the Sumatra coast on 26 December 2004, inflicted wide-spread death and destruction, leaving thousands homeless, wounded and alone. 215,000 people were affected directly by the disaster. Nearly nine hundred people lost their lives and several thousands were injured. The communities affected were fisher folk  as well as other communities such as sea shell collectors and coir rope making communities living in proximity to the sea.

CHARDEP was already working in the coastal villages of the district as they were backward and isolated. The organization did its best in the aftermath of the disaster to help the community cope with their losses and to build back their lives.

  Immediate Aid
Immediately on hearing about the disaster, the staff of CHARDEP reached the District Government Hospital, just as the injured and dead started to be brought in. We arranged for extra lighting in the hospital campus, and helped in identification of the dead. The family members were provided food and beverages and arrangements were made for their shelter.

  Relief Materials Supply
Later, the displaced families had been accommodated at various shelters by the District Administration. CHARDEP routinely visited these shelters and provided clothing, sleeping mats, cooking stoves and utensils as well as provisions such as rice, dhal and cooking oil. CHARDEP was financially supported in these activities by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and to a smaller extent by the Women’s Christian College, Nagercoil and the Pentecostal Church.
