NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 2008-2009

At ATCHANKULAM VILLAGE, KANYAKUMARI DISTRICT.

2009 has been declared as the Year of Climate Change. This is mainly because of the Copenhagen summit scheduled in December this year. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC in a recent speech in London said that “Copenhagen 2009 will be the moment in history in which humanity has the opportunity to rise to the challenge and decisively deal with climate change.

workshop on global warming To take the message of National Environmental Awareness across the remote villages in the southern most end of India CHARDEP along with its network partner PEACE TRUST, Dindugal, Tamilnadu had an aforestation campaign in a village Atchankulam,Kanyakumari District.

Social changes are possible if the women of the community understand and involve in it. Having understood the philosophy we at CHARDEP had planted 500 saplings and had a workshop on Global Warming.
A fruitful season Under the chairmanship of Mr.Manikandan ,Managing Trustee was organized. Mr. Antony A. Xavier our CEO as resource person covered the following aspects in a simple language of the community and so it was very well appreciated by the villagers and they promised to contribute in their own way by making more green belt around the village.

	What causes global warming?
	Is the Earth really getting hot?
	Are warmer temperatures causing bad things to happen?
	Is there really cause for serious concern.
	Melting glaciers, Rising sea levels, warmer sea surface.
	On shore and off-shore fishing and loss of livelihood.
	Tidal changes and sea-erosion.
	What small can each one of us in the village do to contribute to reduce CO2.
	Importance of planting trees in and around our dwelling place.

COMMUNITY PONGAL AT DROP IN CENTER

The community health educators of core community (FSW & MSM) organized a mega community pongal throughCHARDEP(Centre for Human Resources & Rural developmental Program) at the drop in centre on 20th of January 2009. The traditional sweet pongal was cooked by community and served for all. It was followed by various games, cultural programs and creative expression activities. Mrs.Ponnesam , a member of the core group testified that this program has promoted community cohesiveness and has given her a sense of togetherness and recognition for her volunteer service. Oath was taken by the participants to make kanyakumari district free from HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Mr.Pon Asai thabbi,municipal chairman, Dr.Ramasamy, Mr.Neethi Gurusamy, District program officer- APAC, Mr.Suresh Kumar District program manager –TANSACS, Mr.G. Manikandan ,project Director, CHARDEP and Mr.C. Jarvie Bell ,Project co-ordinator ,CHARDEP participated in the program and appreciated the CHE’s(community Health Educator) for their service.
